Solidarity forever!
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) is the umbrella union for workers in the electricity sector. Registered with the Registrar with the Registrar of Trade Union in the Labour Ministry, the NUEE is a product of several mergers dating back to the pre-independence era. Through dedication and the unparallel commitment of its pioneer leaders, the NUEE survived several turmoil and became the authentic voice of workers in the electricity sector.
In the past few years, the NUEE has come under serious pressure to protect and defend the economic, social and political rights of its members in the face of governments determination / resolve to implement its Reform Agenda in the electricity sector which, in every sense of it, was largely perceived as being imposed by western financial institution such as the World Bank and the IMF.
In response to onslaught in its external environment, the NUEE was compelled to re-strategies. The result was a series of media campaigns, retreats and education programmes designed to reawaken workers’ consciousness and draw public attention to noticeable flaws in the Electric Reform process such as faulty conception, sequence, timing and implementation. It is the Union’s belief that privatization of the electricity sector was desirable but can only be done under a transparent and accountable manner that will benefit all instead of the closed and dubious manner the BPE was going about it.
The main objective of this project was to articulate the Union’s role in the reform process, its reach-out approaches to various stakeholders and its effort at creating the conducive atmosphere for peaceful labour relations and co-existence.
It is hoped that this publication will contribute towards the struggle for democratic environment, industrial peace and due process as part of the NUEE’s continued support for activities that seek to contribute to the social, economic and political upliftment of the Nigerian Worker.
To ensure job security and also seek improvement in the general political, economic, social, educational and cultural conditions of members in the country.
